Mark Friday 24th February in your diary; First Light is making a return!

If you missed the last one, First Light is the launchpad for High Street retailers’ new season collections, as well as an excuse to have live music on the street and special offers in the district’s bars and restaurants. We’re excited to be launching two new products which we’ve been itching to tell you about.

Our Puriri Moth brooch has been designed especially for us, in honour of the beautiful native insect and its brief life as a moth. The brooch is bronze, and comes in two sizes: wingspan 68mm at $79, and 38mm at $39. (We’re not exactly impartial, but we think it’s rather lovely. And although we’ll officially launch it at First Light, it’s instore now, so if you’re in, ask us to show it to you!)

Our Flotsam Folk are a completely different kettle of fish; to anything ever seen in Pauanesia! These whimsical, sea-dwelling creatures have been sewn for us by one of our clever kiwi ladies, using a mixture of recycled vintage textiles, and then embellished by another local craftswoman with shoreline flotsam. Intrigued? Come and take a look; they’ll be ready for First Light, and guaranteed to make you smile.

There's a whole lot going on in Auckland City again this weekend. The Silo Markets are back on (we hope, come on rain hold off!) followed by their outdoor movie- this week its 'Stand by Me' and the Chinese Lantern festival is on all weekend too. The lanterns have already started to go up!

We are open till 7pm on Friday nights so we hope you might pop in to see all our new things too, and take advantage of the Aotearama Calendar mark downs!

All our kiwis are handmade locally here in Auckland from salvaged fabrics collect by us. They are made exclusively for Pauanesia. We hope each ones finds a home where they are loved, as much if not more than we love them!

Since it's the districts (little) Black Friday this coming end of week, we thought we better let you know why it's worth coming in to visit us! Asides from all the other things going on, it's a celebration of the whole district, we are cutting back the price of a whole lot of black product.

We've been working hard embroidering these beauties which are slowly filling our window! Our team are pretty handy with a needle and thread, each one completely different from the next. We hope to have it bursting in time for Waitangi Day.

There is also some wonderful hanging lampshades filling the space above them- all one offs, made from vintage and retro New Zealand tea towels lovingly collected by us. They are definitely worth a look!

We've have some wonderfully intricate resin cameos come into the store and with such a busy weekend it seems people have already starting thinking about Christmas! The cameo earrings would make a delightful gift for a mother, sister or daughter.

These beautiful designs are created by Tania Tupu, ex-New Zealand women's basketball player! A woman of many talents.

Below is Tania's Matariki design in both a hanging and stud earring. Matariki refers to a star cluster (pleiades) or the seven sisters. The maori meaning Mata Riki (tiny eyes). The Maori New Year is marked by the rise of the Matariki and the sighting of the next new moon usually in the month of June.

The Mangopare design. Maori for 'hammerhead shark' symbolizing strength, courage, leadership, bravery and unrelenting determination.

And Tane and Wahine designs also in stock.

The incredible dioramas created by Amy Joe for us are on display in store at the moment for the launch of the wall and desk calendars they are featured in. The big, old, square New Zealand sponge and fruit cake tins filled with delight make up some of our window display and are scattered around the shop.

We were lucky enough to be a part of the Viva article about the High St Guilds 'First Light' promotion that was held on the 30th of September. First Light was a wonderful success and thank you for all those who stopped by!

Thisyear we've commissioned our own special 2012 calendartitled Aotearama, it launched last Friday at High St Guilds 'First Light' promotion.

Itis a calendar like no other; artist Amy Joe has embraced an unusual commission;to create 12 diorama installations in vintage NZ cake tins that reflect NewZealand seasons and important occasions.

Amy was supplied simply with a title,a tin and a box of resource for each month which has been collected fromPauanesia by her husband on his way to the ferry and home. The calendar art projectand it has fitted into her busy life on Waiheke with a one year old.

As anex-Pauanesia staffer from her art student days, Amy shares Pauanesia ownerHeather Gerbic’s passion for offering locals and visitors unique New Zealand madeitems imbued with the spirit of Aotearoa.

Big, old, square New Zealand sponge andfruit cake tins that have seen decades of baking service have been gathered andgiven a new purpose our baking mothers may regard as unusual. They have beeninstalled with assemblages including a stencilled teapot and pop-up collages,and lined with trouser fly buttons and embroidered souvenir badges. TheDecember assemblage is a joyful Harakeke (flax) Christmas tree installation.

Amy’sdioramas have contributed to a wonderful quirky and vibrant calendar forPauanesia. Besides a fabulous, big square art calendar for the wall; we havedevised an innovative concertina officecalendar that stands on the desk as a tower with the assistance of two paperclips, or can be pinned on to a notice board.

Despitedate pads on our pocket size electronic devices and computers many of us stillenjoy the ritual of replacing last year’s calendar with a new one, turning thepage every month to a new visual and recording upcoming events and reminders ona printed calendar. Now we can enjoy it even more.

Aucklands Volcanoes.

We commissioned this new Pauanesia tea towel to celebrate the volcanic past of the Auckland's landscape and to acknowledge the first names given to the prominent volcanic cones by Tamaki Maori.

They believed that Mataaho, 'God of the secrets hidden in the earth' and his brother Ruamoko, 'God of Earthquakes and Volcanoes' are sleeping and it is important that they are respected and honoured to avoid any disquiet.

The tea towels border reads:
Auckland’s volcanoes are sleeping. Nga Maunga a Mataaho, the mountains of Mataaho, poke above the Auckland skyline. May Mataaho, 'God of the secrets hidden in the earth’, and his brother Ruamoko, ‘God of earthquakes and volcanoes’, rest quietly.

Wairua.

Our very own new Wairua knitted Merino/Possum Collection has arrived.

This collection has been knitted here in New Zealand especially for us. Our 2011 collection includes new styles and a fresh pallet to co-ordinate with winter fashion and cosy home style.

Wairua is the Maori word for 'spirit or 'soul. It is a Maori belief that the spirits of ancestors roam the landscape of Aotearoa and are all around us: they are present in our mountains, our bush and our lakes and beaches.This belief and the colours and patterns of our landscape have inspired our Wairua Knit collection. The blend of fine soft merino wool and possum fibre is remarkably light to wear and helps keep you glowingly warm. Nylon has been added to ensure that the knit retains its shape and is easy to care for.

The incredible weave work of Dianne Dudfield is all around the shop.

Some words from the lady herself:

'I work in my studio at Pio Shores, Waihi Beach looking across the Pacific Ocean to Tuhua (Mayor) Island and am thrilled by the process of turning fibre into a functional and beautiful piece of art.

I use both an 8 shaft floor loom and a 16 shaft dobby loom creating exquisite fine wraps, shawls, scarves and fabric and scrumptious mohair blankets, combining wool, mohair, cotton and silk in a variety of weave structures. I prefer to work with the finest natural fibres, especially those grown in New Zealand, and often include beads and bright coloured dye work to complement the design. I will add man made fibres for the textural experience and visual excitement to further enhance a unique item.'

Joy Kiwis.

These past few weeks, while our bodies have been in Pauanesia, our hearts have been in Christchurch. It's hard to carry on as normal when everything is anything but normal, so we've been thinking of what we can do to help and came up with a special series of bright little guys we've called 'Joy Kiwis'. Each Joy Kiwi has been lovingly embellished to spread a bit of cheer in a very sad time, and $5 of every Joy Kiwi sale goes to the Red Cross Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund. We also have a little donation box where we and our customers can pop in our change.

As well as the kiwis, our new window features vintage chairs which have been fully restored and re-covered with vintage tea-towels or fabric from our own textile range. We've made them part of our sale (which continues at the back of the store) so if you haven't already, do come and check it out! There are still lots of cushions, lamps and prints marked down to clear. Hope to see you soon!

Happy New Year everyone from all of us at Pauanesia. We hope you got to spend some of the past few weeks out in this incredible weather we've been having.

Homage to Tangaroa (seen below)

A beautiful tea towel all about the coastal sea garden.

Tangaroa’s coastal sea garden of native sea weeds and sponges are incorporated in this new tea towel design by K Morison. New Zealand seaweeds form a charming border pattern and a "floral arrangement" with a paua and other sea creatures as the centre piece.

Aroha Aotearoa (seen above)

Declares our love and respect for Tane’s native kingdom.

Tane Mahuta the Maori god of life, the forests, the birds and human beings created a most special place called Aotearoa. We love this country and we commissioned this Pauanesia tea towel to celebrate Tane Mahuta's kingdom.

Coromandel Vessel (seen below)

Melissa Martin designed a Coromandel inspired tea towel design. She has incorporated Puawananga flowers, Kereru (native wood pigeon), Tui and Piwakawaka birds in her Coromandel vessel surrounded by native moths and fauna. Otahu- smokey teal background and lime green vessel, Kauri- lettuce green background

Hauraki Vessel (seen below)

Artist Melissa Martin designed a Hauraki Gulf inspired tea towel design. She has incorporated Kokako, Tieke (Saddleback), Kakariki (yellow crowned Parakeet), Toutouwai (black robin) and Piwakawaka . These are some of the endangered native birds found on Tiritiri Matangi island bird sanctuary.

Respect the Coromandel

The Coromandel Peninsula is a very special place and its environs are treasured.
This tea towel designed especially for Pauanesia by K Morison incorporates Coromandel native bush and coastal motifs in a retro-styled heraldic crest. The statement "Coromandel too precious to mine" was been added to the design before reprinting in response to the proposal to investigate mining in the Conservation 'Schedule Four' estate on the Coromandel. 'No Way' we say.

And please do not talk your dogs near nesting Dotterals.

Save Our Natives

This K. Morison designed commissioned by Pauanesia features some of our native fauna, birds and reptiles and a plea to help protect them.
Many like the Banded Dotteral and the Kaka Beak are under severe threat. We cherish Aotearoa, the domain of Tane Mahuta the Maori God. Pauanesia supports endeavours to retain wilderness conservation areas for native animals to flourish in once again safe from predators and threats. Simple consideration around the threatened species is essential to ensure their survival.

One of our staff just took a trip to Mexico, one of our XL kiwis joined her as a gift for her friends who showed her around. Here some photos of the kiwi, George Mejor, taking in the sites at Teotihuacan. The pyramids just out of Mexico City.

Some more of our Auckland things in store to show this week. Compilation cushions made by local Penny Reid, new Waitamata Gull wall hangings from Borrowed Earth ($13.90 each and exclusively made for us!) and our lovely friends sitting pretty in the window.

We have a great collection (unfortunately not for sale) of vintage cake tins in the window at the moment too- see the Auckland Harbour tin below. Plus a large selection of jewellery, made by Susan Braithwaite, from vintage cake tins (these ones you can get your hands on!).

Oh and I almost forgot to mention our handmade Auckland and New Zealand inspired cards that are flying out the door. They are just priced between $3.50 - $4.50. Hope to see you in the shop!
